SUMMARIES OF THE PRECEDING PAPERS
RICE VARIETIES GROWN IN MADAGASCAR
WHICH COULD BE EXPORTED
In the course of experiments conducted in view of developping and
improving rice growing in Madagascar, the authors were led to draw
up an inventory of the varieties of rice grown in the Island.
They may be divided into five main groups :
1) Paddy with long thick grains, of the Vary Lava type : Vary
Lava, Telo volana, Mangafya, Ranarana, Tombola.
2) Paddy with long thin grains, of the Tsipala type : Tsipala,
Kalila, Bengaly morima, M adiomatraka, Maftaliofya, Vato patsa.
3) Paddy with demi-Iong grains, of the Mahia type : Manitra,
Kojomoja manitra, Manantsoa, Renivaza, Bengaly madinilia, Maha-
gaga, Angafy, Randrambolo, Anana, Lohambitro, Bemanara, Von-
drona, Mena hoditra, Tsaramandoro, Rambontsoavaly, Angikabe,
Bengaly Vafyaheny, Tsivimbina, Roka mena, Angika, Bemahasoa,
Ovibe, Mahira, Menalfely, Telo volana morina.
4) Paddy with short elliptical grains, of the M adinika type :
Madinilfa.
5) Paddy with short grains, of the Kiriminy type : Kiriminp.
The authors give a description of each of the varieties of rice
above mentioned.
NOTE ON THE MILLING OF RICE
IN BELGIAN CONGO
Rice growing was introduced by the Arabs in the eastern port of
the Belgian Congo. Until the war this culture was but moderately in
favour. People grew it for their own needs and hulling was done by
pounding paddy in mortars. Most of the grains were thus broken and
appeared unfit for consummation.
Rice mills were built by the Government of the Colony, who passed
them on to private entreprise when they reached a prosperous stage.
The author rapidly describes the processus of milling and con-
cludes by asking the help of Government for the keeping up of the rice
mills of the Colony in remunerative conditions.
