RICE GROWING IN THE NIGER REGION
The question of irrigations in the middle part of the Niger valley
is actually much talked of. Irrigation will contribute to the development
of industrial as well as of food crops.
Macina for instance, will soon be endowed with very productive
rice fields. The author quotes, out of a remarkable study of M. BE-
LIME, on Nigerian Sudan, the part dealing with Macina.
In that country, there are two paddy regions : one in which
floating rice only can be grown and another where millet and ordinary
paddy are alternatively grown.
A list of the various local types of paddies is given.,
The husbanding of the rice fields is thus described : On the
flooded fields, weeds are cut under water and left on the spot; as
soon as water is drained off, the land is ploughed with the « daba »,
weeds being removed before ploughing and put back afterwards.
They are then burnt on the ground, their ashes being the only manure
applied to the land. Seeds are broadcastel. Yields depend on atmos-
pheric conditions. A very important condition for success is that,
when flood time comes on, paddy must be sufficiently grown to follow
up the rise of water. Harvesting is generally done before rice is
fully mature, because grains drop off very easily.
On good lands and in good seasons, there can be obtained
1.500 kilos of rice. But as a rule, 1.000 kilos are a fair average.
For the time being, the success of the crop depends on rain and
floods. The dams and various canals the government intend to build
will obviate to this state of things.
Some weeds, a few fish and birds prove very harmful to paddy.
The quantities of rice grown in this country do not meet the needs
of the population who is obliged to buy part of the rice they eat.
CRICKETS AND PADDY IN MADAGASCAR
The island of Madagascar has very probaly always suffered
from invasions of crickets. Ever since the island belongs to France,
people have endeavoured to control them.
