RICE GROWING IN TURKEY (I) (The end)
In the North of Anatolia, rice lands are given some preparation
before sowing : land is ploughed, then divided into « rooms » which
are flooded; a board is drawn along the « rooms » so as to mix
and at the same time compress the soil.
Sowing is done on flooded land at the rate of 150 to 200 kilos
of seed per hectar. Some rice growers drain off the water 12 or 23 days
after sowing in order to allow the plants to grow firm roots, and then
turn the water on again, until harvest time, while others dry the fields
at harvest time only.
Weeding is done by hand once or twice. Weeds are numerous.
When mature, paddy is cut with sickles, left to dry on the fields and
picked out either on the field or on special floors.
In this part of Turkey, water is rather scarce and the author de-
plores the way in which people use it. It should be regulated so as to
allow a more reasonable use of irrigation water.
There are very few rice mills. Rice is still unhulled in a mortar
with a pestle. Some progress is necessary on that line also.
A LEGUMINOUS PLANT FOR THE IMPROVEMENT
OF LANDS ON WHICH TENTH MONTH PADDY
IS GROWN, IN BAC-NINH PROVINCE
The author describes the culture of Crotalaria striata used as
green manure.
It is grown either alone, or in association with maize or maize
and soja. The land needs hardly any preparation. As a rule the cutting
of the foliage is done twice, but it can be cut several times according
to the needs of the rice grower and the atmospheric conditions. Three
days only are necessary for the rotting of the leaves. After the second
cutting, just before transplanting paddy, the roots are plucked out
and then the green manure is scattered on the field. Three days after,
